Audacity is a digital audio editor and recording application. Audacity is cross-platform and is available for Windows, Mac OSX, Linux and BSD.

Audacity was created by Dominic Mazzoni while he was a graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University. Mazzoni now works at Google, but is still the main developer and maintainer of Audacity, with help from many others around the world.

The latest stable release of Audacity is 1.2.6, released on 15 November 2006. As of 30 Jan 2009, it was the 8th most popular download from SourceForge.net, with over 54 million downloads. Audacity won the SourceForge.net 2007 Community Choice Award for Best Project for Multimedia. Audacity is free software and is licensed under the GNU General Public License version two, but may update to GPLv3 after version 1.4.0.

<text>Well I've been with AOL for over a decade and mostly I stay with it for habit and because I don't want to change my email addresses after all of these years. It is starting to look a bit dated to be honest and the browser is dire - I use it for AIM, the added content, and email but use IE8 for everything else. When I moved to AOL from Compuserve it seemed like a big step forward - this was in the days when you could only have an email address made of numbers! lol. They need to upgrade its homely GUI - looks like a sort of 90s disney toy - and the added content needs to be more customiseable. Still I stick with it because I always have.</text>

<text>Took a little while to get used to the GUI, but once I had followed the tutorials it took over completely as my 'go-to' DAW for making new music. So, if initially you find it a steep learning curve, stick with it. I still use Ableton Live because it handles audio well - I don't like FL's Edison and never will, but with Rewire Live and FL Studio make good companions. </text>

FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) is a digital audio workstation, developed by Didier Dambrin (also known as 'Gol'), lead programmer of Image-Line Software. Music is created by recording and mixing audio and/or MIDI data together to create a song, which can then be saved to the program's native .FLP (Fruity Loops Project) format. Songs can be exported to a Microsoft WAV or MP3 file compatible with most media players. As the developers like to say, you will be creating wav, mp3 or midi songs or loops only minutes after launching it.FL Studio is a pattern-based music sequencer, which allows the artist to create songs in pieces (patterns) using the Step Sequencer and the Piano Roll view, then merge those pieces together using the Playlist window. The Effects Panel provides access to a wide range of software effects that can be automated for dynamic sweeps, rolling bass lines and texture changes. The program is especially well known within the hobbyist music community as a relatively low-cost, user-friendly platform for the creation of hip hop, electronica and dance music, although the complete version contains a sufficient amount of features for handling the production of songs in many different genres.

Ableton Live is a professional loop-based software music sequencer for Mac OS and Windows by Ableton. The latest major release of Live, Version 8, was released in April 2009. Unlike other software sequencers, Live is designed around the notion of being as much an instrument for live performances as a tool for composing and arranging. It is also often used for precision mixing of tracks by DJs.
