<text>Google Scholar has been indispensable for my research this semester and so many semesters before. The breadth of features is not immediately obvious, but they are quite useful: finding related articles, restricting the time period, seeing all texts that cite a given article and so on. I find I prefer the relative simplicity of the interface to the common alternatives (such as Academic Search Premier and Web of Science,) but wish there was a built-in way to manage my sources. Finally, the ability to associate with a university (and, thus, its subscriptions to academic databases) means I don't have to waste as much time tracking down electronic or hard copies elsewhere.</text>

Google Scholar is a freely-accessible Web search engine that indexes the full text of scholarly literature across an array of publishing formats and disciplines. The index includes most peer-reviewed online journals of the world's largest scientific publishers. Its advertising slogan — "Stand on the shoulders of giants" (paraphrasing a quotation from Isaac Newton) — is a nod to the scholars who have contributed to their fields over the centuries, providing the foundation for new intellectual achievements.

<text>Bean is a nice, simple piece of software that uncomplicates word processing. Its feature list may not be particularly robust, but I rarely find myself needing much more than simple rich-text editing. Moreover, it is difficult to argue with its price tag.</text>

Bean is a small, easy-to-use word processor (or more precisely, a rich text editor), designed to make writing convenient, efficient and comfortable. Bean is Open Source, fully Cocoa, and is available free of charge!
