<text>I really like this mail client that comes with OS X. Until I recently switched to using Google mail and MailPlane, this was my client of choice. My only complaint is that it can be pretty slow to sync with imap servers. I still use it for my non-google mail accounts. Clean, lean and pretty.</text>

<description>Mail (aka Mail.app or Apple Mail) is an e-mail program included with Apple Inc.'s Mac OS X operating system. Originally developed by NeXT as NeXTMail, a part of their Nextstep operating system, it was adapted, following Apple's acquisition of NeXT, to become OS X's Mail application. Mail uses the SMTP, POP3, and IMAP protocols, and supports MobileMe and Exchange via IMAP. Both the iPhone and the iPod touch feature a mobile version of Apple Mail.</description>

<text>I use more and more web applications every month to run my business. However, I find the browser is not always the best place to use them. Fluid lets you create a standalone app for a web site. It's a wrapper around Safari webkit. The nice thing is that you get a separate icon for the app in the dock so you don't have to go hunting through browser tabs to find the one you want.</text>

<text>Google mail is great. MailPlane makes it fantastic. It's essentially a GUI wrapper on the firefox (I think) browser engine. The main benefit for me is the ability to handle multiple gmail accounts, but the other user-interface bits make gmail even better to use.</text>

<text>I really love the minimalism of the interface. I know it's not very extensible but I've never been a big user of plugins and the few I do have for Safari suit my needs.

It's fast, simple and very standards-compliant.</text>

<text>I've used a lot of RSS readers over the years but I keep coming back to NetNewsWire. The key things for me are the ability to sync between machines (always an important consideration as I use at least four different macs regularly) and being able to manage a large number of feeds and articles.</text>

<description>NetNewsWire is an easy-to-use RSS and Atom newsreader for Mac OS X which syncs with Google Reader. Its familiar three-paned interface -- similar to Apple Mail -- can fetch and display news from thousands of different websites and weblogs, making it quick and easy to keep up with the latest news. It has a free ad-supported and a premium ad-free version. Features include:

* A tabbed browser lets you read web pages with the convenience of staying in the same window.
* Search your news items with a standard Apple search widget -- as in Mail and other applications.
* Downloads podcasts and enclosures, and sends podcasts to iTunes with with your choice of genre and playlist.
* The flagged items feature lets you mark items that you want to keep -- they stay forever or until you mark them as unflagged.
* Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) compatible, and includes Automator actions to control functions in NetNewsWire.
* Other features include syncing, smart lists, search subscriptions, built-in styles, and AppleScript support.
Includes a built-in categorized list of feeds that can be easily subscribed to.</description>

<text>Still my IDE of choice after many years of use, although sometimes it starts to creak under its own weight. Eclipse is like the Emacs of the 21st century, hugely extendable and flexible, with plugins for lots of different technologies. My main criteria for adopting a new programming language or technology is whether there is an Eclipse plugin for it.</text>

<description>Eclipse is an open-source, platform-independent software framework, written primarily in Java, for delivering what the project calls &quot;rich-client applications,&quot; as opposed to &quot;thin client&quot; browser-based applications. So far this framework has typically been used to develop Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), such as the Java IDE called Java Development Toolkit (JDT) and compiler (ECJ) that comes as part of Eclipse (and which are also used to develop Eclipse itself). However, it can be used for other types of client application as well.</description>

<text>Even though I use the subversion support built into development tools such as Eclipse a lot, Versions has proved a very very useful addition to my development tool suite. The interface is clean and simple, providing access to all the major features of subversion. It is also very good at handling checkins of very large file sets (in the thousands) which cause Eclipse to choke.
