Changelog for version 10.0.0.90

More

Autodesk 3ds Max, formerly 3D Studio MAX, is a modeling, animation and rendering package developed by Autodesk Media and Entertainment.

3ds Max is the third most widely-used off the shelf 3D animation program by content creation professionals according to the Roncarelli report. It has strong modeling capabilities, a flexible plugin architecture and a long heritage on the Microsoft Windows platform. It is mostly used by video game developers, TV commercial studios and architectural visualization studios. It is also used for movie effects and movie pre-visualization.

In addition to its modeling and animation tools, the latest version of 3ds Max also features advanced shaders (such as ambient occlusion and subsurface scattering), dynamic simulation, particle systems, radiosity, normal map creation and rendering, global illumination, an intuitive and fully-customizable user interface, and its own scripting language. There is also a plethora of specialized renderer plugins that can be bought separately, such as V-Ray, Brazil r/s , Maxwell Render, and finalRender.

From the first time launching the program, the most noticeable change is to the interface, with the new “ViewCube” and “SteeringWheels” widgets NICE!

Excellent piece of software. Handles MOST documents with ease, with a vast array of plugins to allow it to import many file types.

However, there are a few issues, such as crashes for no reason, random geometry additions and a disappearing interface that can plague you if you aren't lucky. And one wrong click and you could force it to do something ridiculously power-consuming. If there was a warning box beforehand, this wouldn't be an issue.

The interface, despite the occasional flaw, is very nice to use when you are used to it. Especially since it's fairly customisable, and hotkeys can be assigned to near-enough anything.

Performance of the program is very largely dependant upon what you have open in it. You can easily load up something like Team Fortress 2, oblivious to the fact you left it open.
However, it does not like a lot of polys in a scene. At all.

The price is very steep, especially for hobbyists who can't afford to spend that much on a piece of software. Add to this that each extra version adds very little and charges an upgrade fee, it's not a cheap program at all.
