If it wasn't for this program, I wouldn't have been able to or even bothered to copy all my DVD's over to my portable harddrive. Then I wouldn't be able to enjoy all my DVD's while I'm living or travelling overseas.

easy to use, good amount of customizability without sacrificing usability. Just a couple more features or options to bridge the gap between beginners and advanced users would be fantastic

This is one remarkable one: it combines simplicity with quality of output. The main program only needs 2 parameters: what to use for input and how to name the output. Everything else is optional. But the default settings tend to produce a very decent result. The program handles interlacing and cropping rather well and does a good job at choosing the resolution. No messing with defining different stages of encoding process, calculating bitrate or optimal quality factor, choosing pre-demuxed audiostreams or even cutting the final AVI so it would fit onto CDs. The program does it all by itself. And the best of all - it relies on well-known external programs to get to that - DMPEGDEC for demuxing the VOBs, VirtualDub for encoding, VobSub for getting the subtitles.
I´m not really a fan of "front-end" programs (preffering native programs which do the needed actions themselves, not spawn some other process/program which needs additional resources), but this is one fellow I like and often use (y)

it really taught me about video and container files :) Brilliant piece of automated encoding. Better than straining your brain on graphedit :)

Ever since I found AutoGK, I have never used any other software to encode DivX/XviD video. It's free and it's simple and it does everything for you on it's own.

This is a really good program for converting video. I wish that it had more options for audio formats, and that it were a little easier for non-experienced users to use. But if you know what you're doing, this is one of the best programs for converting video, and it's free.
