you should be able to manage the partition within your windows 7 install. once youve installed windows 7, the disk management for windows 7 will work just fine for removing the formatting the old partition.
yes you could format the partition, but i think youre better off using vmware for windows and running windows 7 on a virtual machine first if youre worried about not liking it. i think youll end up switching to 7 anyways ;P
yes, youre safe to dual boot. i recommend at least 128mb video for aero in windows 7. you also can get "windows xp mode" update from microsoft and youll have a licensed version of windows xp pro to run in a virtual machine via "windows virtual pc"
