<text>I've been blogging with LJ for six years. Back then, the site was somewhat innovative, with a generally solid backend and interface.

These days, the interface shows its age in comparison to other sites, and some of the features are frustrating to use. Some new features, such as LiveJournal Messenger (which piggybacks on Windows Live Messenger) seem good on paper, but their implementations leave something to be desired.

Generally however, LiveJournal is accessible and works well, especially if you know others using it. The 'friends' page prevents you having everyone's RSS in from across the web, and the photo hosting works well.

Having won a 'permanent account' (i.e. all features, one-time payment) I never see ads, but these frustrate a lot of users. I'd like to hear of their removal someday.</text>

<text>DA has one of the most active communities of any art site, which says a lot about how good it is. The feature set is extensive, and offers a lot of power.

However, if (like me) you're only there to browse, the frustrations set in quick - lots of the features are locked without a paid account, and there are adverts everywhere (including lots of items that inform you of the limitations if you click them) and if you're not willing to pay, this puts you off pretty quickly - hence the low interface and price/value scores. </text>

<description>deviantART is an art site, founded on August 7th, 2000. As the name describes, the site accepts almost all art, the most recent addition being Video posting. Currently, the site is at Version 6, codenamed Sleek.
The site supports journals, &quot;deviation&quot; - submission - thumbnail posting, and more. Some features, however, are only available to members who pay a one-off fee (this varies depending on how long the subscription is to last. The shortest length is 1 month, and the longest, 1 year.), who are subscribers.
deviantART also offers a print selling service to all users, allowing them to sell their works as prints, mugs, and more.</description>

<text>Wakoopa for music. Good recommendations, instant-on radio, an active userbase, and an API to allow data access in applications.

Not without its problems; the last redesign was unpopular, there is a fair amount of comment spam, and the advertising can be intrusive (but there are ways and means of avoiding this).

Still, highly recommended.</text>

<description>Last.fm is a UK-based Internet radio and music community website, founded in 2002. It claims over 21 million active users based in more than 200 countries. On 30 May 2007, CBS Interactive acquired Last.fm for &#163;140m ($280m USD).

Using a music recommendation system called &quot;Audioscrobbler&quot;, Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations or on the user's computer or some portable music devices. This information is transferred to Last.fm's database (&quot;scrobbled&quot;) via a plugin installed into the user's music player. The profile data is then displayed on the user's profile page. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user's favourites.

Users can create custom radio stations and playlists from any of the audio tracks in Last.fm's music library, and are able to listen to some individual tracks on demand, or download tracks if the rights holder has previously authorised it. Registration is required to acquire a profile but is not necessary to view any part of the site or to listen to radio stations.

Only free in the U.S., Germany and U.K.</description>

<text>A great media player. All the media playback functionality you could ever want, plus a selection of management features (conversions, tag editing, file operations and utilities) in a light, fast package. Does exactly what it says it should.

Shame it's Windows only! =P</text>

<description>Foobar2000 is a freeware audio player for Windows developed by Peter Pawlowski, a former freelance contractor for Nullsoft.
Featuring a minimalist interface, it also boasts many features for metadata support and high-quality audio output. The theoretical maximum sampling rate and bit depth for audio output are both far in excess of the capacities of even professional-grade audio equipment. To maximize the audio fidelity of consumer-grade equipment, it provides noise shaping and dithering.

It features a number of official and third-party components which add many additional features. While the core is closed source, the author provides an extensive SDK under the BSD license. Since version 0.9, foobar2000 supports Windows 2000 and later releases only.

Features: audio formats supported natively: MP1, MP2, MP3, MP4, MPC, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC / Ogg FLAC, WavPack, WAV, AIFF, AU, SND, CDDA, WMA; more audio formats supported through optional components, official or third-party; full unicode support; customizable user interface layout (new in version 0.9.5); advanced tagging capabilities; support for ripping Audio CDs as well as transcoding all supported audio formats using the Converter component; ReplayGain support - both playback and calculation; customizable keyboard shortcuts; open component architecture allowing third-party developers to extend functionality of the player.</description>
