Azureus implements the BitTorrent protocol using java language and comes bundled with many invaluable features for both beginners and advanced users.

Features

Azureus allows users to specify maximum upload and download speeds and is configurable. Azureus also allows users to open some files that have been completed before the entire torrent from within the program. Additionally, Azureus can serve as its own tracker, allowing users to share their own files with others without uploading it to any site. Azureus supports Message stream encryption, an anti-throttling method. Peer exchange and the magnet: URI scheme are supported. An integration with the Nodezilla Grid Network is implemented as a plugin, enabling the anonymous storage, sharing and publication of torrent files. Azureus also features multiple ways of viewing a file, such as Swarm, Peers, and Pieces.

The single greatest problem with this app is it needs Java. And if anyone has used a JVM before for hours on an end, you will get resource creep and/or instability.

I'm another Mac user who doesn't have this installed, despite what Wakoopa thinks. It's probably a misreporting of oXygen, a Java-based XML editor. A bit lame if Wakoopa mistakes all Java-based apps for Azureus...

Don't like it, tried it in curiosity for a day, but hurried back to utorrent. Main reason is the high resource usage and the added functions (dashboard, website offering extra content, et cetera).

Just the best torrent software i've ever tried!

This shows up for Limewire under OS X. Needs to get separated as I would not be seen dead using this, chews RAM and much better clients are available such as Transmission and µTorrent.

    µtorrent ftw!

Worst bittorent client I ever used. Huge resources hog!

I have the same problem as Vext.

  • vext vext 3 months ago

This is showing up in my profile using an OS X client and I don't have it installed. Transmission is the only client installed on this machine. I assume this is getting flagged from another Java application (of which I use many) ID somewhere?

Unfortunately, BitTorrent encryption doesn’t work against the more aggressive, and ever evolving throttling applications. Even though there is a Comcast proof BitTorrent encryption in the making, it is always easier to use political means to stop ISPs from messing with our traffic in the first place. The plugin is listed at Azureus’ Sourceforge page if you want to help out.

For the paranoid BitTorrent users among us, Monahan guarantees that the data will be sent anonymously. “Be assured that sharing this data with us does not involve disclosure of any of your personally identifiable information. We will aggregate the data and may talk about it or disclose it publicly, but no data about any specific user will be disclosed as part of this effort.”

    Author's Description
Help Azureus (Vuze) gather data on Internet traffic throttling.

This plug-in works with your Azureus (Vuze) application to gather information regarding interference with your Internet access and send it to Azureus (Vuze).
Specifically, this small piece of software monitors your network connections and every ten minutes measures the number of interrupted connections (called reset tcp connections) and then displays the results to you. By selecting the share results check-box you can also share these results with our central server, which enables us to then aggregate the results and compare them with customers of other ISPs. We strongly encourage you to mark the share results setting.

Sharing this data with us does not involve disclosure of any of your personally identifiable information. Azureus (Vuze) may aggregate the data collected and talk about it or disclose it publicly, but no data about any specific user will be disclosed. Use of this plug-in has a negligible impact on your network usage.

Right now the plug-in only works on PCs, not Macs, but we are actively working on future versions. Users from all countries are welcome to participate. Alternatively, if you rather install the plug-in using the plug-in wizard built into our application, go to our Wiki to learn how to do that.

Thank you for your cooperation in this research. We hope that contributing more complete factual data to the debate over appropriate network management will lead to better regulatory solutions.

A serious resource hog, but the most advanced torrent-app I've seen to date.

So what happened? It's called Vuze now or...?

This slows my entire system down and demands to use all of my system resources to download torrents at a slow pace. It's not so much a RAM issue as it is a CPU issue. I don't have enough to it to spare for this.

When I use iBackup (Mac OS X 10.4), it apparently registers here as Azureus. iBackup creates Azureus.plist files as it runs.
