The Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC) is a non-commercial middleware system for volunteer computing, originally developed to support the SETI@home project, but intended to be useful for other applications in areas as diverse as mathematics, medicine, molecular biology, climatology, and astrophysics. The intent of BOINC is to make it possible for researchers to tap into the enormous processing power of personal computers around the world.… More Edit

If using it may help others - I'll use it as much as possible.
I use it mostly to seti :)
A great and easy way to donate CPU cycles to good causes all around the net. I myself donate my CPU time on several computers to Freerainbowtables.com or for those who are interested: http://boinc.freerainbowtables.com/distrrtgen .
I use it for Rosetta@Home, protein folding.
I use it for calculating rainbowtables - freerainboetables.com
Looking for little martians ;-)
I started with Seti@Home on a hacked Xbox.... years ago.
I use it on Windows and Linux : No problem
Fun.
Awesome, just awesome. It's running CUDA and using 100% of my quad, and I am feeling no slowdown at all, even during intensive processing that I'm doing. Feels good to give the CPU cycles that XP used to use to finding aliens and researching cancer :3.
Calculating rainbow tables... :D
Helping out with SETI, Einstein & World Community Grid. This program keeps them running smoothly. The GUI is a bit outdated though..
I have 3 PC's running this one constantly. I have been helping the SETI project for around 10 years now. Help SETI (Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence).
Helps making the world a beeter place. I leave my pc on often (e.g. when I'm having dinner, taking a small break) so might aswell donate that idle time to good purpose. This manager makes it pretty easy to manage your projects and see how they are doing.
While theoretically using wasted cpu cycles in the background is a good thing, you have to watch out that this system doesn't eat your cpu alive. I have used these programs to help since SETI came out about 10 years ago. Whether it is a bug, bad version or whatever, I could never get the current system to work so that I could help ID aliens. If you install it, use something like Process Lasso to make sure it is not taking away from your machine.
I feel bad if I leave my computer on doing nothing, so this let's me leave it on while helping the world by running scientific tasks with my CPU in the background while idle.
