While theoretically using wasted cpu cycles in the background is a good
thing, you have to watch out that this system doesn't eat your cpu alive. I have
used these programs to help since SETI came out about 10 years ago. Whether it
is a bug, bad version or whatever, I could never get the current system to work
so that I could help ID aliens. If you install it, use something like Process
Lasso to make sure it is not taking away from your machine.
I feel bad if I leave my computer on doing nothing, so this let's me leave it
on while helping the world by running scientific tasks with my CPU in the
background while idle.
I am happy to see other people are using Boinc as well. Sometimes I think
there are too few people running it, while its just such an easy process. I look
at it at the start of the day and at the end of the day I sent back the 100%
results. When I got too many tasks, I pause the workload, to finish what needs
to be done first. Furtheron I never noticed any slowdown on my computer. And it
feels GREAT to help science!
Great piece of software. It allows you to donate your spare computing power
to an admirable cause. I would recommend this to everyone. The best part is that
it works on Windows Mac and Linux.
BOINC is a platform for distributed computing applications. If you want to
donate your time to a project, let BOINC know, and it'll handle everything but
the actual project application.
It's very neat, and most distributed computing projects support it, with the
notable exception of Folding@home, which has had difficulty supporting BOINC
users.

Lets my otherwise idle CPU do something. I like the idea of that.
My CPU's helps to search life in space :)
Good software for good causes.
I tend to run mine as a screen saver on my PC and my laptop to work while I'm away.
I use it for SETI[at]home: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/results.php?userid=9054164

Runs CPU intensive tasks in the background (at Idle priority) to support science.
Sometimes buggy.

Execellent...puts the PC into something useful when It's on and nobody is at it.
Excellent ....i use it for Seti
Works in the background well.
