… More EditBoxee is a media center application that is being developed by a small startup company. Boxee supports a wide range of multimedia formats and includes features such as playlists, audio visualizations, slideshows, weather forecasts reporting, and an expanding array of third-party plugins. As a media center, Boxee can play most audio and video file formats, as well as display images from many sources, including CD/DVD-ROM drives, USB flash drives, the Internet, and local area network shares.
Through its Python plugin system, Boxee includes features such as YouTube and Apple movie trailer support, SHOUTcast, and Podcast streaming, as well as online picture viewing of such services such as Flickr and Picasa.
Through the processing power of modern PC hardware, Boxee is able to decode high-definition video up to 1080p, however as Boxee does not currently support hardware video decoding it is placing the entire load of the video decoding process on the system's CPU which means that users need by today's standards a very powerful CPU to decode native 1080p videos encoded with the H.264 codec.
Boxee source code is based upon XBMC which it uses as its framework, and the Boxee developers contribute source code back upstream to the XBMC project[12][13]. Boxee is distributed under the GNU General Public License (with a few libraries used by Boxee licensed under the LGPL). Boxee's social networking layer library, libboxee, is however closed source as it deals with proprietary methods of communication with Boxee's online back-end server which handles the user account information and social network communications between the users in the Boxee userbase.

I use boxee because its pulled away from XBMC with a better plugin infrastructure and management, social aspect and generally better design.. would be nicer if there were a choice of themes.

Exceptional media centre software that is available on all major platforms. Love it! Use it almost everyday in my livingroom.

I'm surprised everybody is so extatic about Boxee. I have stopped using it since it couldn't even index my whole movie collection. From my 1000+ movie and tv-show collection it recognized only 157 movies and 4 tv-shows :s If I want Boxee to index the rest of my collection, I should do this per movie or change all the filenames to match IMDB. Both of the solutions are way to much work for me.... Interface is great though!!
Holy ****! This is the best media center in the world. It does EVERYTHING and it's still an alpha build! This is by far the most awesome way to watch movies and tv shows in 5.1 digital sound with 1080p visuals.

The Windows version needs a little work. The Linux version works very well. Boxee is a great media center and is getting better all the time.
Best social media center ever!
One of the better media center applications. Very easy to navigate and use, and includes some social features like recommendations. Recently, the Windows version has been irking me by adding the same movie/episode multiple times with no way to fix that other than a reinstall (I also tried rebuilding the library in the general settings to no avail).
this works really well, better than other standalone media players I've used, and all the possible web feeds are awesome!
This is a media manager software application. It lets you watch all your movies, tv shows, netflix, internet video content (not hulu though) and listen to musicIt is still in alpha so fairly buggy and all features arent implemented yet. I like the automatic cataloging of movies and tv shows. I wish it handled m4v and mp4 files over smb network without skipping on my appletv, it also needs dvr functionality and abilty to watch live tv. I use it on mac and appletv.
