Another way to check if a site can be reached from a third party IP is to use
a web proxy like http://www.hidemyass.com. If the site loads in HMA but does
not load directly then it's down for you only.
Once in a while I get an error "This doesn't look like a site on the
interwho" which is ambiguous. Does that mean the site timed out or the
domain could not be resolved? If it's the latter then I think their nameserver
isn't very good because I always nslookup the domain on OpenDNS after I see this
message and it always resolves for me.
Simple site that does one thing: Checks to see if another site is up or not.
