eMusic is an online music store that operates by subscription. It differs from other well-known subscription music services in that the files available for download are in the MP3 format, making them fully compatible with all digital music players, and free from digital rights management software restrictions such as expiration dates, or copying or CD burning limitations. The lack of digital rights management (DRM) encoding and low price model have made the service unappealing to the Big Four record labels, leading it to specialize in underground artists and non-mainstream music genres, including indie rock, pop, jazz, electronica, new age, underground rap, traditional music, classical music, hardcore punk, and experimental music, all on independent labels.

Edit
I love eMusic. I have a subscription that costs €20.99 a month and I get to download any 75 tracks for that. There's not that much in the way of mainstream/top 10 music but that's a good thing really. However, you will recognise a lot of the music. Nice social features like "Friends" and "Neighbours" for recommendations. No DRM. Lovely.
eMusic used to be fantastic, with generous download quotas and conditions. Of late, they've made some poor decisions that make the service far less valuable to me. It is still one of the best stores to find obscure music though, so I haven't given up yet.
fucking shite .. sorry to swear but this is a wanky application.... (fullstop)
I really like emusic.
I don't buy into a lot of big bands, so it is perfect for most of my musical needs.
They recent upgrades and changes that have happened over the last year have really improved emusic
I hate sites that want your credit card number in order to see what the site is all about. I wouldn't let someone hold my credit card as I walked through the music store. Talk about
entrapment or temptation. Once they get all that info they might as well know your Mom's maiden name too. Spooky transaction. It seems real shady and dishonest way to get customers in the door.
Emusic isn't a substitute for Zune or iTunes as a music store as it focuses on independent and world music not licensed big label music.
Because most of it is stuff I've never heard of, it can be a bit overwhelming to use my monthly download credits if I don't have anything set aside as must have. Their recommendation system isn't bad, but as short as the song previews are determining whether or not you *really* want to download something can be a bit of a crap shoot.
Through Emusic, I've managed to get my hands on some music I was having trouble finding elsewhere and I've discovered a lot of great music that I'd otherwise not know existed. I've enjoyed the years I've had their service and look forward to many more.
Free 50 songs ftw :D
Alright site, though the "50 free songs" is kinda lie just for them to get your credit card details, still good site I don't find all I would like on it but some songs I can't get on iTunes I'll come here.
