The Finder is the default application program used on the Mac OS and Mac OS X operating systems that is responsible for the overall user-management of files, disks, network volumes and the launching of other applications. As such the Finder acts like the shell on other operating systems, but using a graphical user interface. It was introduced with the very first Macintosh computer, and also existed as part of GS/OS on the Apple IIGS. It underwent a complete rewrite with Apple's switch to a UNIX-based OS in Mac OS X.

I use both Leopard and Vista intensively each day. Vista's Windows Explorer is vastly superior to Finder. It is possible to find things incredibly quickly and the interface is completely customisable.

Microsoft stole a few ideas from Finder for Vista, but the breadcrumb-trail / location bar is original and very effective.

I think I need to try Path Finder too.

I installed OS X on my PC not too long ago to try it out. I have to say, apart from some programs that I chose to forget, Finder is one of the worst attempts at something to manage files with I have ever encountered. The 'feel' of what files you have just isn't there. What is even more disturbing is the fact that you can't cut and paste files. You have to copy and delete, who came up with that stupid idea? (To clear things up, I am talking about the Tiger version, I have no idea about Leopard).

Finder is intuitive but there's room for improvement. Keep up the good job, Apple!

It is better than Windows Explorer as far as the look and feel. I still think there could be some improvements even in Leopard. The visual upgrades do help...

The Finder was crap in Tiger, but it's much more usable in Leopard. Decent piece of software, but could be much better.

Has its quirks, but overall, a solid file browser.

finder has actually become useful in leopard. still could be improved quite a bit, but it's a great upgrade from the old tiger version.

finder in tiger sucks, but it's much better in leopard, with quicklook and cowerflow and the new look
