I used xmind first, but it was horribly slow and thus hard to work with. Freemind has a simpler presentation and enough features for me to mindmap efficiently without all the bulk. Naturally there are some things to be desired, such as not having to restart the program each time settings are changed (or not having any notice if you forget to save them in the first place), but it's great bang for the buck!
While I prefer XMind over it, I must admit FreeMind is an excellent tool.
Nice mindmapper, probably not as much features as commercial one, but it's really good.
@lensovet: it's not part of Eclipse or built on it, I think it's a much older project than Eclipse, but built using Java, that's what they have in common
Excellent mindmapper; nice detail: documentation is available as a mind map inside the app (tip: load doc/freemind.mm if you get an error on startup - v 1.8.1 / osx).
