Ok, it's a bit complex at first but you know precisely what you are doing on the pictures.

This is amazing, but what's the best way to convert photoshop users to this?

It's free and it doesn't suck.

A good alternative to Photoshop for people who want something free to do the job, minus a steep learning curve. The amount filters available make this a companion to photoshop for me.

Photoshop is the king in this field, but being a free, GPL Licensed tool with most of the capabilities of Photoshop built in, as well as heaps of stuff Photoshop can't do, it's an awesome app.

Shame it takes so long to load and uses so much ram (But then again, Photoshop uses more...)

    better than photoshop

The interface is very clunky making it difficult to find what you are looking for if you are doing anything beyond the basics. But, it's free and works on a variety of systems so that makes it worth trying to learn. I still think most people will find Photoshop Elements easier to pick up and learn.

It takes a long time to get to grips with but under the hood is very powerful and is cross-platform.

GIMP provides image editing capabilities that are impressive for a free, open-source application. Yet many users will find GIMP lacking in terms of support and features, and even the average of users will likely be turned off by it's dated, tedious interface.

Photoshop is a must for the serious graphic artist. For the Mac user, Pixelmator is also worth keeping an eye on: http://www.pixelmator.com/

It's good for very basic graphics manipulation, but until it supports adjustable (non-permanent) layer effects a la Photoshop, it just isn't usable for most of my graphics work. The UI also needs a serious overhaul.
