Google Groups is a free service from Google where groups of people have discussions about common interests. Internet users can find discussion groups related to their interests and participate in threaded conversations, either through the Google Groups web interface, or by e-mail. They can also start new groups. Google Groups also includes an archive of Usenet newsgroup postings dating back to 1981 and supports reading and posting to Usenet groups. Users can also set up mailing list archives for e-mail lists that are hosted elsewhere.

Old school Usenet, I like it
I'm so surprised by the utter lack of Google Docs integration. Google is really missing out on a collaboration experience here. You can thankfully share a document with a group so all the members get access individually since a few months, but shared documents don't show up anywhere in the group. How hard is it to make a box called "Documents" next to "Files"?
Otherwise, it's pretty useful and free :)
super handy to search through gobs of information
Good forum and has massive useful information.
Crear proyectos colaborativos
Handy and with alerts delivers stuff to me... love it with gmail...
Does the job - allows collaboration and keeps everyone informed.
Can be difficult for friends to get onto the group - easier if they already have g-mail accounts. Lacks the ability to add tabs. Page design a little clunky.

I don't really use this much at all.
Easy to setup and maintain.

easiest place to share.......ermm......... files xD
Simple and does the job
Great service, the only sidedown is the 10 MB filesize limit.
Thankfully that is easily resolved using any filehost, and linking it at discussion pages.
