Google Wave isn't all that special. It incorporates a lot of existing technologies, but ultimately it fails in the performance and ease of use departments. It runs horribly on my wife's laptop, both in terms of speed and in layout. The majority of content in the Waves is cut off because it goes too far to the right. There's no left/right scroll bar. The thing is also horrible with going through Playback. It's just so busy that Playback is near worthless. The worst part is that there's no way to lock a Blip in a Wave to prevent someone else from editing it, or from deleting everything in the Wave.

It's pretty heavy on resources and makes your fans spin up. I also heard that if you leave it open it starts dragging more and more.

This thing is not an e-mail killer. I honestly can't even think of a reason to use it other than to test it out and say I've used Google Wave.
