GSpot is a free utility which identifies the codec required to play an AVI file and supplies other information as well. GSpot is a Windows-based freeware designed to identify codecs using in video files. In addition, the application also checks if the required DirectShow filters or Video for Windows codecs are installed and configured for proper playback. The application was originally created to support AVI. It now includes full support for Ogg and limited support for numerous other commercial container formats, including numerous versions of MPEG, QuickTime movie, and Windows Media Video.

Great application for all info on a video file!
very useful tool to diagnose can't play issue, or to check which codec is used.
Essential for any ripper, or anyone who wants to "see" inside a video file and check it's quality.
Useful to find conflicts with your codecs too... A little expertise is required to do that, but it is much better then nothing!
Very useful video/audio tool. Able to determine what's inside and what codecs I need to play it if it is unplayable.
The most throughful AVI indentifier I´ve come across: shows used audio and video codecs, can show if these codecs are available in the system, displays technical details about how the AVI was built, detects incomplete files, can even run the the streams through the system to detect which filters get used to play them, and so on. The only shortcoming is the lack of support for more modern containers like OGM or MKV.
