For those who don't know much about Guild Wars may think of guild wars games
as expansions. But, they are actually stand alone games that intertwine with one
another. In other words, you only need one copy of the three GW's to
play(Prophecies, factions, or nightfall). GW may not have a persistent game
world, however it more than makes up for it through its art direction and
cinematic storyline.
Arena net is also making a non-standalone expansion that is coming out in Aug
31st GW: Eye of the North. This expansion features two new races that will be
playable in GW2 (not including former enemies the Charr). that allow you your
future GW2 characters to "inherit" your accomplishments and items.
GW:EN will act as a bridge from GW to GW2.
