Hearts of Iron 2

Hearts of Iron 2 is the sequel to the most appreciated World War II PC game of true Grand Strategic scope ever made. As in its forbear, the map spans the entire world and allows you to play one of over 175 countries during the course of World War II.

The game is completely revised with an updated combat system, a new map, revised and easy-to-use interface, new technology tree and hundreds of other updates and improvements.

Hearts of Iron II also later included an Expansion in it's boxed set entiteled: Doomsday in which an Espionage Panel as well as several new countries and scenarios were unveiled. The Time limit was also extended until 1953 in-game allowing World War III between The United States and the Soviet Union to Commence.

  A very niche Gaming Genre, HOI2 is by and far the best Armchair General WWII game I've ever played. (You move divisions of units, research technology and deal with Worldwide diplomacy.) Every country in the year 1939 is playable from all the big name ones, down to tiny Luxembourg. Left alone World War II usually unfolds on it's own, however with good strategy and a good grasp of history you can change the outcome of the war. You can see what would happen if Hitler had been smarter about Operation Barbarossa, you can have Nationalist Spain join the Axis, or you can have Japan invade the Mainland U.S.. In all of these scenarios the choices are yours, just see if you can live to see the end of the scenario. :P
