JC&MB's nice little note taker is the small engine that keeps a 8 pixle red tag on the side of my screen. It has a password protected and open interface for keeping simple notes. I use Evernote for the big jobs, but this ever present ASCII style interface has totally replaced my using MS Notebook for the simple stuff. I did try Notebook++ for the same tasks, but it was too much. This is the just right oatmeal of desktop notes.
