The 2nd most popular word processor on Linux
LyX is a document processor that encourages an approach to writing based on the structure of your documents (WYSIWYM), and not simply their appearance (WYSIWYG). LyX combines the power and flexibility of TeX/LaTeX with the ease of use of a graphical interface. Edit

A great wysiwym editor, lots faster to use than typing pure LaTeX. My main criticism is (for the Mac version) that the interface doesn't integrate well with OS X, but it does the job.
It'd be much more useful to me if its support for DocBook wasn't so out of date.
If you are a technical writer this is indispensable. This is the first application we introduce in our Virtual Teacher Training Programs.
I use this application intensively for scientific writing. I think it saves hours when typing equations compared to using Texshop. The UI can get irritating sometimes but it remains a great application I could hardly live without.
