simple and effective. there is no competition with other programs in this category, imho.
The only messenger I use, I don't really like the UI, and it's kinda slow too. Good messenger, make sure you've installed Live Plus too though.

Windows Live Messenger has to be my favorite instant messaging program out there. It blows AIM and Yahoo out of the water.

F*king bad program XD use SKYPE!!
Handy to talk to friends, but chews quite alot of resources.
Piece of junk that I only have because a lot of people in the Netherlands use it. It is just a f*cked version of IRC..
