Microsoft Office Communicator is an integrated enterprise communications client, enabling information workers to communicate in real time through the use of instant messaging (IM), voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and videoconferencing. Unlike Microsoft Office Outlook, its email counterpart, Office Communicator cannot be used as a standalone application but requires Microsoft Office Live Communications Server, now known as Office Communications Server in order to run, making it the only application in the entire Microsoft Office suite to require a server.
