Pretty certain that you wouldn't want to install a service pack with XCOPY.. but I agree, not a very enjoyable experience - the progress bar isn't up to anything useful and after I'd installed it is surprisingly hard to tell which service pack I'm using from the about menu. Odd.
That asides, it does know what services you have installed...
XCOPY was invented to avoid installers like this one. Worst install experience ever.
