A decent enough general purpose RSS reader, and possibly your best choice on
the Mac. I use it because of the NewsGator integration allows me to 'clip'
articles and repurpose them as a separate RSS feed which I automatically publish
to a Wordpress Blog. Works well in tandem with NewsGator Go on Mobile, some say
the iPhone version is great too.
The interface is beautiful for the most part, the ability to use a 'Combined'
Google Reader like view, with version 3.x is great. It's got the browser
built-in, so that you can click links from within the stories and have them open
in Tabs, which is nice.
That said, its not without some minor annoyances. The occasional Syncing
Error forces you to start over. Also, sometimes I wish it had more keyboard
shortcuts.
You can navigate forward all right using up-down arrows, but given that it
paginates your news items, if you try to navigate back from the first item of a
new 'page', you'll go back to the first item of the previous page (instead of
the expected last item viewed).
Also great would be a "Panic" button ala Windows counterpart
FeedDemon. An easy way to set default sort options for all folders. But given
that its the best thats out there, I guess Mac users have to wait till Newsgator
releases a newer version which fixes these problems.
I use NetNewsWire (NNW) daily to pick up, filter and sort about 70
newsfeeds.
It's great having a new feed hooked up to a NewGator account so that I can
clip news article into various categories and have these posted automatically
through to various websites and blogs.
NNW itself is superbly organised and simple to use.
Feeds can be dropped directly into folders within NNW and are automatically
updated as they are added. Folders can be used to organise feeds and all feeds
in a folder are aggregated so it's easy, for example, to have a folder call
'mainstream news' containing CNN and the BBC feeds, viewing the 'mainstream
news' folder then shows all feed articles from both CNN and the BBC.
Keyboard shortcuts make it easy to advance through articles and unread feeds.
If you want to read everything, just keep pressing the space bar; NNW
intelligently advances either the current article (if there is more to read) or
to the next unread article.
Then there are smart folders. These allow you to create folders based on
search terms. If you are interested in, say, articles containing the word
iPhone, just create a smart folder based on that search and all articles
containing iPhone are presented in one place.
The internal browser is good for most things (a few media files will not play
but you can open the article in your web browser of choice straight from NNW, no
problem). I use the preview pane mostly for reading feeds, then tap the
right-arrow to open a tab with the source page if I need to read more.
All in all NNW does the job I need. Integrates well with the rest of my OS X
tool set (it properly integrates with the OS X services for example) and gets a
big thumbs up. Definitely one of my most used tools.
I use it mostly to see my clippings. I'd prefer to use the actual reader on
my iphone and use the clippings feature to save apps or papers I'd need my
desktop for.
When I first downloaded it, I never thought I'd use it on a regular basis. I
was disappointed at first to see it was just an RSS reader when I already was
already using Safari's RSS support however, I've found Net News Wire to be a
much better alternative.
Some features I'd like to see include recommending feeds and stories based
of my subscriptions and what I've read and a quicker way to add feeds for news
sites, such as Google News.
NetNewsWire goes beyond the capabilities of most other RSS feed readers by
offering online syncing, direct posting to blogs and delicious, multiple layout
views, and myriad other features which allow the user to customize the way they
view and process their news.
I was late to the party with this RSS client. I had used Google Reader for
most of RSS reading life but switched to app for one simple reason - the iPhone
companion app. To me, an app that just resides on the Mac or the iPhone is
useless (granted there are exceptions like Shazam). This is great because I can
seamlessly switch between my Mac and iPhone and always pick up where I left
off.
I've used a lot of RSS readers over the years but I keep coming back to
NetNewsWire. The key things for me are the ability to sync between machines
(always an important consideration as I use at least four different macs
regularly) and being able to manage a large number of feeds and articles.
Perfect RSS reader when coupled with iPhone version because it keeps it in sync over the air!

Probably my all time favorite app. Not related, but wish the iPhone version would allow for offline reading.

Great RSS reader, the great thing is that this application can syncdirectly with your iPhone, so no need to read twice the news.

I think this one is better than Google Reader. It's the greatest RSS Reader I ever had.
