The newest version (3.0 for Mac OS X in beta) is a GREAT alternative to
Microsoft's Office platform. Of course, it isn't perfect, but it is faster and
more focused on doing what you need than Microsoft's tools.
wtf? for a free program it is quite ok. I use it rather than Office 2003 or
that n00b version Office 2007. Writer is quite the same as Word so i don't see
what your problem is
I would rather hand write everything in my own blood than use this poor
excuse for a office suite. I would rather pay for Microsoft Office than have to
piddle through this like it's 1990.
I use Openoffice.org for everything... Writer for my word processing needs
(which are admittedly few), Calc for records (about 10 different spreadsheets I
use on a daily basis), Impress for occasional school projects (great
compatibility with office 2003), and Draw for everything else. Draw for
calendars, greeting cards, report covers, business cards, flowcharts... its a
blank piece of paper with limitless possibility. Since I have to work to get the
result I want with Draw, I prefer it over everything else. Very underestimated
tool.
Good for a free application but requires much more refinning to be a valid
alternative to MS Office. For example, In only three days of using (about 15hrs
of use)I found about 2 dozen bugs, some of which make using OpenOffice very
frustrating.
However, so far the help file seems to be good. If OpenOffice continues to
improve (including compatibility with MS Office and Lotus Notes, etc) it can
become a staple in homes and offices.
As for some folks here saying tha MS sucks, etc....
Grow up people, Get a life and Be realistic.....nuf said.
At work I'm stuck using Excel 2000. I have to export files in CSV format so
they can be imported into another application. But if I have to go back and edit
them, half the time Excel 2000 refuses to open them.
OpenOffice does open them. Every time, without complaint.
"minor compadibility issues with word". Well, Word is not
compatible with everything but Microsoft. OpenOffice is open in lots of ways and
it is good. Sometimes slow though, but still works faster than MS Word 2007.

Great! just a shame it won't open certain files
On the subject of "minor compatibility issues".

Clunky software that crashes alot. Used it a couple of times through out college, then decided it was better to pirate/buy MS Office.

Good for general officing, but for outlines, and advanced officing, not the best. Loads a tad slow, and minor compadibility issues with word.
best office solution of all
Microsoft sucks!
Great alternative to M$ 0FF1CE
This will do anything M$ office will do unless you are calculating how to fly to the moon.
Unless you really need Microsoft Office, this is a much more reasonable choice for a casual user of Office suites.
