I've used RoughDraft to write several novels. It creates .rtf files (like WordPad). I'm using something else for novel writing now, but still use RoughDraft almost every day as it is easy to open, doesn't take much memory, and has some handy features including a file list that remains open on the screen, and a note pad for extra notes on whatever project you're working on. For a free light weight writer's tool, I recommend it.
