Lag of all sorts remains a major issue even all these years into it. Avatars
are always rubber-banding or lag-moonwalking whenever you try to move. Lots of
good RP communities, though.
Had a wonderful 2 years meeting folks, dancing, listening to live shows and
learning to build and script. But after a while it gets stale. You can live for
free, or minimize your "costs" to by things by building things to sell
in the web market places.
Has your life become impossible? This is your chance to escape and start all
over. Reinvent yourself from the bottom up. Tired of being one sex? Try a
different one. You want green hair? It's yours for the sliding. On its most
basic level, it can be easy to do and free if you just want to dabble. On
higher levels, it can be The Most Dangerous Time-Sucker you've ever seen. It
isn't a game or a toy. There are real people in there behaving as nicely, but
especially as badly, as they do in Real Life.
I recommend downloading it (if you have a good enough graphics card and
fast enough internet) and just wandering around, looking at what people have
made. Try not to be overwhelmed by the commercialism and look at the creativity
and see if this is what you want to see more and more of.
Use the Search button and check out the showcase. Visit Chichen Itza, mad
fairs, medieval roleplaying, futuristic sites.
Search for groups with your interests and do things or just chat. But
beware, you get on for 10 minutes and hours fly by.
Althought it has many features in common with a 3d game.
ultimately second life is social software. its content created and
traded by its members. think of it as a chat into which you can input not
just words but sounds and graphics as well.
this makes it a great medium for performing music. creating art.
discussing, teaching, sharing and selling. games? yes they exist. roleplaying
areas are common and people make more traditional structured games and
puzzles. ultimately it though it is a social medium, a society. this means
that getting starting in second life can be as daunting as taking a new job in
a different country.
maybe if you pretend you are on a witness relocation programme?
Ultimately secondlife is as diverse and interesting as you are.
Aside from the more recent problems it's had, and the controversy that it's
had, it's still a decent place to check out. I've admittedly seen worse places
than here.
A great alternative to the standard viewer.
Perhaps I'd like it if my computer was faster.
love it, quicker, and more reliable :)

Stupid shit.
Much better than the default viewer. Runs faster and has tons more features.

Going to give it a try
The game doesn't even work for me yet I have a top-spec pc.
Aside from the more recent problems it's had, and the controversy that it's had, it's still a decent place to check out. I've admittedly seen worse places than here.
It's more a 3d-chatenvironment then a game. But it gets very laggy on my computer. It runs good for the first minutes and then gets slower and slower.
I used Second Life a few years ago, but I left it. Today I visited it again. It changed a lot over these years that I didn't visit Second Life.
Cool virtual world !
