The latest version of Semagic contains the following changes:
· Posting to vox.com (no editing).
· Post options for Blogger (tags, draft state).
· Upload into personal albums at fotki.com.
· data: URL for images.
· Adult content setting.
· Fixed entry deletion with Blogger, picture upload with WP, music detection with foobar2000.
· Loading settings from .ini files is disabled.

Atom publishing API implementation at Vox contains some errors that prevent editing of existing entries. That means that you can press "save" but entry is not updated at the server without any error messages.

Settings from .ini files are disabled because this method is slow, does not work for some users and generates many random crashes for large .ini files. It is replaced with another option that exports/imports registry key to/from a binary file (semagic.re1). You can copy that file with Semagic to a flash drive.

Do not change adult setting if you use a blog site that does not allow such entry property or you will get an error and will not be able to post. Or disable completely from the right-click menu on the dropdown list.

data: URL works only for Firefox, Opera and IE8 and has different image size limitations for each browser (and also there is a general limit for LJ entry size). Use it only if you know what it is about.

A quick review of changes in Semagic during last year: now it works with new version of Blogger, you can specify image size for LJ Scrapbook and put them under lj-cut, Semagic works on Linux and Mac OS via Wine.
The latter is reported to depend on particular version of Wine and system, e.g. for me it runs fine with the most recent version of Ubuntu but for some users crashes randomly (Update: now is reported to work for all after an update of Wine; only parts that depend on IE will not anyway). It is not reported to crash on Mac yet.
Posting to Blogger requires authentication using your google account (gmail email or other email address and password) instead of Blogger username and password.
Image upload to photobucket and tinypic from Semagic no longer work. You can use fotki.com for quick uploads without registration instead (select "Fotki.com Hotlinking" as image server).

HTMLTidy Aug. 27th, 2006 @ 05:07 pm
[info]quirrc
Now those of you who requested xhtml compliance can use it in Semagic because it is integrated with HTMLTidy (http://tidy.sf.net ). This library is an HTML parser that can check and fix HTML in a desired way. Currently the library is used with default options and xhtml output turned on.The usage of the library is enabled in Options/Editor and works only in WYSIWYG mode i.e. when output of mshtml should be converted to proper HTML before posting entry or switching to HTML mode. Also when this option is enabled, <strong> and <em> that are generated by mshtml are replaced with <b> and <i>.
HTMLTidy is applied before conversion from <SPAN atomicselection="true" etc. to LJ tags so it may rename internal attributes making conversion impossible. Please do report if you will have any such problems when using lj-cut and lj-poll tags, complex code with many attributes etc. An example error that was already fixed is disappearing spaces between <div> tags when alignment attribute was set.
To quickly see what HTMLTidy does you can type some text in WYSIWYG mode, apply bold and other formatting, switch to HTML to see the code that mshtml generates, then enable option in Options/Editor, switch to WYSIWYG and back and compare.

Another new feature is ability to save and load settings from .ini file rather than registry. The file is saved in the installation folder, initial initialization of it occurs when you enable corresponding checkbox in Options/General. Working with registry is faster so better enable .ini file only if you really need it. Note that if you manually edit that file do save it in unicode format or the data will be corrupted. The size of.ini files is limited on windows 9x so that option is disabled to prevent data loss because typical size of settings in Semagic is significantly higher than that limit. Also note that it is for those who need to quickly run Semagic from removable drive in the first place, i.e. friends history is not saved etc. so to transfer settings to a new computer better export corresponding registry key via regedit (HKCU\Software\Alex Semenov\LivejournalU)

General reminder how to use Semagic with several accounts. If you have accounts with different usernames: type new username in the login window, select server and press login. If you have accounts with the same username: type anything to represent another account in the login window, go to server settings and change real username, press login.
Also note that posting to multiple journals works only with accounts listed in the login window, not with communities.

Now you can upload images to another 3 popular sites: photobucket.com, imageshack.us, tinypic.com. Imageshack and Tinypic do not require to register before upload but have certain limits after which images are automatically resized as you can read in the terms of service for the particular site. Images are uploaded using emulation of web interface with cookies from Internet Explorer. Repeat the steps described in the previous entry except additional authorization step which is specific to Flickr. Keep in mind that cookie may have rather short expiration time. For example, cookie for Photobucket is now set for 2 weeks so you will get a message that you need to log in again.
Also now you can select default image size and use tags for Flickr (via right-click menu) and paste image data from clipboard. By default, images for Flickr are inserted as middle-sized (240 px) clickable thumbnails pointing to the full image page.

Now you can upload images to Flickr. That means that both free and paid LJ users can insert images from the local drive and have them automatically uploaded somewhere before posting. Note that you need to login to Flickr in Internet Explorer because Semagic always uses IE cookies for authentication during upload.
Step by step instruction )

IE here means a browser which cookies are accessible by external applications. You can continue using other browsers but need to login at least once via IE to make the cookies for flickr.com saved.

General note if you used Semagic for a long time but at some point it started crashing on login ... )

There was an error in the previous version of the program that sometimes resulted in incorrect escaping of lj-cut tags. Now that is fixed and also lj-cut and lj-poll tags are made atomic. That means that their behavior in WYSIWYG mode is similar to lj-user tags which can be selected only as a whole and edited only via context menu or corresponding toolbar buttons. Note that this atomic behavior works only for Internet Explorer 5.5 or above.
For example, for not updated windows 2000 the initial version of IE is 5.01 so in WYSIWYG mode lj-user, lj-cut and lj-poll tags are shown as plain text and autospellchecking does not work (version is written in Help/About in IE, for XP users it is 6.0 so everything works).
Note that this requirement does not mean you should use IE as browser )

Also this release fixes a problem with spellchecker that existed for 2 years and appeared only if you did not have writing access to the dictionaries in the folder where you had installed them previously. That error resulted in a crash at some random point during spellchecking for those several users who had such unusual configuration but before in their reports it was not associated with the account type and access rights.

Now you can update tags from server. Their list is downloaded and merged with the existing list from taglist.txt file which behavior was described in the previous entry.
Also the latest release has a poll creator and there are some changes with macros that are described in corresponding help topic. Note that at LiveJournal.com polls can be posted only by paid users.

About insecure passwords:

Note that the message that you may get during login is *not* from Semagic. Also later you will not be able to login or do anything at all (via client or web) if your password does not meet those requirements.

Update: To have tags converted to lowercase (to avoid duplicated tags that only have different case) create a file taglist_lower.txt (or rename existing taglist.txt). When that file is found, tags are loaded from it and converted to lowercase. For uppercase create taglist_upper.txt. Otherwise taglist.txt is used and tags are not converted.

There were reports about some strange display effects when using auto spellchecker in HTML mode: when the text reaches the bottom of the screen and the window starts to scroll, the cursor jumps one line back and forth during typing. I saw that error before and it was fixed after version 1.5.1.0. If you still see that or any other effect with auto highlighting please provide more information about it: whether it occurs always or depends on how fast you type, it happens only in main window or also when editing entry in history, does it depend on the font size etc.
Or you can report about any other persisting annoying behavior of the client not related to spell checker.
Update: with new highlighting method, that behavior with cursor jumping is eliminated at least for those users who initially reported it.

Also now there is an auto correction dictionary in the latest release of the program. Currently it is for English only. Please provide me a link if you know where to find such list of common misspellings for your language.
