So intuitive and necessary, it should come standard on OSX. It has millions of uses: Customer support, archiving onscreen info, quick posting to sites and forums, and image hosting when you just want to try something in Firebug but don't have access to a server. Glorious time-saver. I even used it to make a quick photo-diagram of how to use our remote control.

The interface could be more standard, but apart from that it's an awesome app. Really speeds everything up.

Skitch is one of my favourite apps. I really can't believe it's free, and would be willing to pay a reasonable amount if it wasn't.

The basic screenshot function is not as pixel-perfect (it gets pretty compressed) as the Apple keyboard shortcuts, but it is incredibly easy to then just commit your image to Skitch's history or drag it into a more appropriate app. The drag and drop interface is seamless and so cleverly designed, that the app gets out of your way, by minimising itself, when you want to drag your image elsewhere. All Apple apps should come with this function!

I also find Skitch is brilliant for annotating web site designs. I will screenshot a design, and then use Skitch to add emphasis and explanation. As there are no layers or many design options to choose from, you don't spend hours beautifying your notes (which I am guilty of doing in Photoshop) but you can quickly drag and drop everything on in a reasonably presentable style.

The only slight downside is that, when you post an image to the web, it get considerably compressed and as a result the image can have a lot of noise which is tricky if you've been screen-shotting text.

Hard time explaining to people not to upload large images to web sites? Users using to large images in Powerpoint? Install Skitch, give them a 3 minutes intro and your problems are gone.
