I had just started using spaces again but was frustrated by not being able to easily identify one space from the other. Search on the web for 'different wallpapers in different spaces' brought up SpaceSuit. It does just that. It has a cool icon that sits in your tray and onto which you drag the wall paper you want for the space you're in - and hey presto! Also interfaces to growler so as you move from one space to another you get notification. Simple but effective.
This is a great free app for displaying different wallpapers on each space. I wish it had more features though
