A system tool developed by Sysinternals

Process Explorer is a freeware computer program for Microsoft Windows created by Sysinternals, which was acquired by Microsoft Corporation.

Process Explorer is a system monitoring and examination utility, similar to a souped-up version of Task Manager, and often can be used as the first step in debugging software or system problems when in the hands of an experienced software engineer.

Process Explorer provides many unique features that can be used to empower the user of the product to track down problems. For example, it provides a means to list or search for named resources that are held by a process or all processes. This can be used to track down what is holding a file open and preventing its use by another program. Or as another example, it can show the command lines used to start a program, allowing otherwise identical processes to be distinguished. Or like Task Manager, it can show a process that is maxing out the CPU, but unlike Task Manager it can show which thread (with the callstack) is using the CPU information that is not even available under a debugger.

Process Explorer works on Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista. It also works on 64-bit versions of Windows.

I was hesitant to try this, since it just seems like more bloat and unnecessary disk space use. But as it turns out, the extra features are worth the tiny amount of space it uses. While it's running, it does use more resources than I'd like. But still, I don't think I want to live without this one.

To my mind, it is the best Windows Task Manager around.

    Best taskmanager I've used yet!
Could use some more keyboard shortcuts though.

Really nice features the the normal Task Manger is missing. It nicely shows what is hogging the system resources, just by hovering the mouse over the graphs and does a nice job of grouping processes. Also a really nice feature, I love, is the "Find Window Process", just by dragging the icon to the running app.

    A very super taskmanager

A super-Taskmanager. It gives much more control on processes. Its ability to "Suspend" processes in place of just killing them, is very useful when cleaning some malware which create back the deleted processes.
Colored highlights make it easy readable. Freeware and standalone.

Much more comprehensive than Task Manager but I usually leave Task Manager running in the background rather than Process Explorer cause PE uses 2% of CPU most of the time on my machine and I don't like to waste CPU cycles.

two thumbs, a "must have". replacement for windows task manager.

I use this every day for development. Not only does it give you much more basic information than task manager in a better interface, but it also gives you thread data per process as well as stack information per thread.

much better than the default process monitor with Windows 2kxp.
Everyone should add it to the startup folder

Process Explorer is the best system monitoring and examination utility. We can use it as a replacement to the default Task Manager and this utility will do the job beautifully.
