I got a student edition of The Sky when I did astronomy at university and thought it was OK. When using it again recently I got frustrated with the interface and after a quick search found Stellarium, which I think is *way* prettier, easier to use, and it's open source.
Stellarium claims to be ready for professional use, projection and telescope-control as well, but someone with expertise would have to comment on that.
