I've use Thunderbird in conjunction with Yahoo! Mail for 2 years. The two compliment each other nicely. I'm primarily interested in the security aspects (SSL for POP). I switch computers twice a year, but I never thought of using the Portable edition -- http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/thunderbird_portable -- until I saw the post at http://blogs.cnet.com/8301-13554_1-9770471-33.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=DefensiveComputing . That's the way to do it. With the size of hard contemporary hard drives, you can back up the whole enchilada for safekeeping, and take it with you when you need to switch computers.

Hey, turns out I'm a top user of this software ;). I agree with most of the posters here. It's good, and potentially great. Just needs a couple of small tweaks, especially a slicker and smoother user experience.

Thunderbird is an email client by Mozilla, creators of Firefox. It is a robust email application that includes a simple interface that hide its advanced capabilities. The one area it lacks is a calendaring application. There is currently an early beta called Lightning which integrates with Thunderbird. Another alternative is to use Calgoo, a separate but excellent calendaring application.

Definitely better than Outlook, but missing a calendar feature. SunBird is a seperate application, and it isn't smooth at all. Wish there was a 30Boxes plugin.

Works very well, but cracks under pressure with a critical malformed header bug that has never been fixed - basically makes TB unusable. However, if you don't experience that bug, it rocks.
