I love gvim, it is the best editor ever (learning curve is slow for a newbie though)

Really powerful text editor. It's almost 40 years old!
Open source thus free. It was a bit complicated few years ago but it's ok now. Lack: no shortcut to step from a tab to another, but i'm pretty sure it's coming soon.
    Happy viming! ;-)

I can't say I'm crazy about the various programs (vim included) that they're embedded in, with the arcane model of files and other peripheral stuff used, but once normal mode commands and the use of EX mode is hardwired into your brain, every other way of text editing feels sorely lacking.

I have been using vi since 1979, and it is embedded in my soul. Can't live without it.

I use Vim for everything, not just for coding. I've even written a novel using Vim. With the right customizations, you can adapt Vim to almost any kind of text editing job. It's flexible and fast. From what I've seen though, the biggest hurdle to anyone starting to use Vim is that it is completely different from all other text editors out there. Its editing modes and command set may seem baffling at first, so it definitely takes a significant investment of time to learn. I did that while I was in college, so it's not hard now, but most people will simply not have the time or patience to learn it.
