Vkontakte.ru is the most popular social networking site in Russia and Ukraine, and the most visited Russian site overall (even more than search engines such as Yandex). Because of its design and functionality, Vkontakte.ru is often claimed to be a clone of Facebook, accommodating not only a very similar concept, but also a comparable business model. As of January 2009, the network claims to have 26 million users. Since 2007, major Russian companies have been sending job offers via Vkontakte.ru. Most of the site's users are university and high school students. However, as the site's popularity increases, more and more people are joining, many of whom are youths of various age groups. Translated into English, Vkontakte can mean "linked in" as well as "in touch."

Складывается впечатление, что главная цель разработчиков интерфейса - как можно больше времени отнять у пользователя.
