I've used this several times to find public-domain photos to use in my projects. I think it is a great resource. Definitely worth looking at if you're looking for photographs.
They might as well have stuck a big 'fuck you' on the door. Very, very bitey to new users and whatnot, I'd stick with Wikipedia to upload to if I were you, and wait for someone else to upload it to commons.
