Wikipedia is a free, multilingual encyclopedia project operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites) and encyclopedia. Wikipedia's 10 million articles, about a quarter of which are in English, have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone who can access the Wikipedia website. Launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, it is currently the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet. Everybody is free to edit the pages, but on wikipedia they prefer that you make a user account.

I love wikipedia, even though most of my teachers tell us not to go on wikipedia, because it can be "unreliable" (which it could be) i still go on it for school work.

pentru cunostinte de cultura generala este mult mai mult decit suficienta, este utila si pentru cei care cauta informatii de specialitate. Nu-mi imaginez internetul fara Wikipedia. (ro)
Helps a lot sometimes. Good for getting minor information. If you need really serious scientific data it might be not a good source. Anyway it depends and wiki is getting better with every day.

Well then, I'm a WP author (mainly in de.WP) myself, so I like it of course. The only thing worth criticizing is its deletion policy. While the English WP has a bunch of articles about bare bullshit, the German WP deletes too much stuff IMHO...
It's hard to fulfill everyone's requirements.
