This program keeps quitting unexpectedly on my Mac while trying to use Wine...
I use it a lot for forwarding X sessions.
Mac OS 10.5's version of X11 was initially a train wreck (I think this was due to the transition from XFree to XOrg). I returned to X11 with Mac OS version 10.5.6 to find it much improved and usable again.
Used for GIMP!!!!!
Used for IE6 emulation!
The double edged sword of the mac. Incredibly useful if one's goal is to port *nix programs to the mac, yet incredibly aggravating if one unsuspectingly opens an app and sees the bouncing X appear.
X11 on a Mac empowers the user to choose from a wide assortment of opensource programs that would otherwise be unavailable to them without additional hardware. I find it to be a very stable environment ... and very lean in terms of overhead -- as it should be. Like any *nix system it is extensible though I have run into compilation issues where Apple versions failed dependency requirements. OS X includes GLX, an OpenGL extension that supports using OpenGL within a window provided by the X Window system.
The OSX variant of X11 does not include OpenGL. This is incredibly annoying.
