If you are in need of a Webserver, SQL database or wish to test out web applications, or host your own web server and can't be bothered to learn how to do it, because you don't care how the back end works, this is your app. Mac, Linux and Win versions, utilising Apache MySQL and PHP as well as other tools such as Perl, Webalizer and much more.
A great application for local programming.
I use it alot in conjunction with the Google Maps API these days, where the map reads of a local SQL-database.

Extremely easy to install and configure! Great web-server-in-a-box. It's nicely organized and comes with most of the right stuff (the Tomcat add-on really sold me). After running (in a Win VM) for several days, it appear to be stable, and everything worked without a hitch. After 15+ years as a *nix web dev and admin, XAMPP is definitely what I'll be using when I need a quickie L/WAMP set-up to play with.

Probably the easiest and most reliable way to get working WAMP (Windows, Apache, MySQL, PHP) installation. There's pretty much no configuration required except from answering a few questions during the installation.
This is a great solution for Windows, but Linux users are better off with for instance a LAMPP installation with tasksel.
