Here is a link, a snapshot in time if you will of what I tend to use on Linux: http://www.box.net/shared/022houryq4.
Please note I have recently removed Nero, Scribus, Skype and Blender but the rest of the applications remain the same and are my mainstays for everyday work.
Hi guys. I see there hasn't been much activity over the last while so I'll try to be the catalyst for some more conversation. Regarding F/LOSS software on Windows it is difficult to persist with a "free as in speech mentality". I moved to Linux some time ago but tried Windows again with the release of Windows 7 Beta. Windows 7 contains some major improvements but again it is difficult to find the array of non-commerical OSS available for Windows. For this reason I highly recommend Linux and (U,X,K)-buntu or Debian in particular.
@smur89 - I think an open conversation on F/LOSS alternatives would be interesting to hear everyones ideas and possibly their experiences, good or bad.
P.S. - Has anyone tried the Linux tracker yet?
Dont think theres a lack of FLOSS, probably just as juch as there is for windows. I dont know why i use the proprietary stuff, i suppose i just like the way they feel, i tend to try out a couple of alternatives before settling.
I never spent much time on Ubuntu, so i cant really compare them. i went through about 6 or 7 different distro's before settling on linux mint. Linux mint is the OS i use on the Family PC (i hijacked it, obviously) but i have XP running through VMware aswell, for the rest of the family. Im going to take Mint off the macbook though, its too annoying to use without a 2 button click pad/mouse
It seems to me that most Mac users use mostly proprietary software, I wonder why, is the there a lack of FLOSS being developed for the Mac, or does the Mac just come with everything your need.
@smur89 How do you find Linux Mint v Ubuntu
Use mostly prprietary stuff. but yeah, i agree bring on the linux tracker. ive got a tripple boot on my macbook, Leopard, XP and Linux Mint!
Ah the "I'm a Mac" people are always first :-) Well I'm a PC, and yes we suck :-( Bring on the Linux tracker :-D . Question, as a Mac user do you use many Open Source apps or mostly proprietary?
Hey, guess we're the Irish contingent so. Afraid my apps are all a bit boring! Anyone used anything fun for Mac lately?
