Also might want to try using Paint .net (as its called) as a replacement for Paint, I tend to use it for doing screen captures to PNG's...
Yeah the price is the issue with it.. But if you need it, you need it.. I tend to prefer the more low-cost options but I ended up using this when I was in school/cheaper..
You were looking for an SSH app better than putty. Only one I can think of but its a commercial app now is SecureCRT.. Got a demo on their site if I recall http://www.vandyke.com/products/securecrt/index.html
