<text>Does exactly what you need from a file manager, with the added bonus of providing a desktop. It abstracts complexity away from the user and certainly does not get in the way during file management. I have only had issues with server connections taking a little time to instantiate and the need to use IP rather than hostnames (of course these may be problems with the underlying systems but I have found that commandline smb and ssh connections used at the same time are without issue).</text>

Nautilus is the official file manager for the GNOME desktop. Browse directories, preview files and launch applications associated with them. Is responsible for handling the icons on the GNOME desktop. It works on local and remote filesystems.

Several icon themes and components for viewing different kinds of files are available in separate packages.
With tabbed file browsing it makes for a simple file manager with minimal windows cluttering your desktop space.

<text>With version 0.7 Tracker (the indexer, daemon etc not just the Search Tool which is the UI) is moving to a more semantic rdf ontology of acting as a store and retrieval mechanism for other applications to use. Acting as a service this excellent desktop search client will then be able to join the underpinnings of a semantic desktop (e.g. GNOME 3.0) through interaction with Zeitgeist etc. So while, for now, Tracker is a fast, lean desktop search tool and file indexer the future should be very exciting.</text>

Tracker Search Tool is a GTK-based GUI for Tracker.

Tracker is a tool designed to extract information & meta-data about your personal data so that it can be searched easily and quickly.

See http://projects.gnome.org/tracker/ for Supported data sources.

With Tracker you no longer have to remember where your files are.

To locate a file you only need to remember something about it, such as a word in the document or the artist of the song. This is because as well as searching for files in the traditional way, by name and location, Tracker searches files' contents and metadata.

<text>As I was doing a lot of work in Netbeans yesterday I thought this was being mislabelled. I thought Snow Leopard had fixed a lot of the glitches with Java app names (no more (null) in Activity Monitor etc) but I guess not all of them.
Looking at ps -A:

0:00.06 /bin/bash /Applications/NetBeans/NetBeans 6.7.1.app/
92:49.13 /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/

I guess this is what a brower JRE plugin look like as well. Ah...

Vuze (formerly Azureus Vuze) implements the BitTorrent protocol using java language and comes bundled with many invaluable features for both beginners and advanced users.

Features

Vuze allows users to specify maximum upload and download speeds and is configurable. Vuze also allows users to open some files that have been completed before the entire torrent from within the program. Additionally, Vuze can serve as its own tracker, allowing users to share their own files with others without uploading it to any site. Vuze supports Message stream encryption, an anti-throttling method. Peer exchange and the magnet: URI scheme are supported. An integration with the Nodezilla Grid Network is implemented as a plugin, enabling the anonymous storage, sharing and publication of torrent files. Vuze also features multiple ways of viewing a file, such as Swarm, Peers, and Pieces.
